Congratulations and Thank You for Choosing Mandolin and Magnolia!

We are so honored to capture the most fleeting stage of your child’s life – those precious first few weeks. Below you’ll find important details about your upcoming newborn session at our studio. We hope this information helps as you prepare for our session together. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Preparing for Your Newborn Session

Feeding & Comfort:

If possible, please feed your baby before arriving so they have a full tummy. I understand that travel can sometimes make this difficult, and if we need to start with a feeding, that’s absolutely fine.

Don’t worry if you’re running behind! I always allow plenty of time and understand that a newborn can make timely arrivals challenging.

If you’re breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid caffeine the morning of the session, as it can affect baby’s sleep or cause tummy upset. If you’re bottle-feeding, feel free to bring a bottle or two of pumped milk. Also, gas drops are a good idea if baby is adjusting to a new formula or has been particularly fussy in the last 24 hours.

Clothing & Wardrobe:

It’s best to bring baby in a solid outfit or if you have one you’d like them photographed in, you can put it on the prior to arrival. Don’t forget the bib though, just in case they spit up.

I tend to photograph newborns mostly in our styled wraps or with minimal clothing, so you won’t need to bring many outfit changes. Please avoid tulle or scratchy tutus, as they can be uncomfortable and leave marks on baby’s skin. If you’d like your baby photographed in a particular outfit, feel free to bring it along if you have not already put it on them prior to arrival.

We also have a collection of upcycled outfits that complement our studio style, but keep in mind that frequent outfit changes may upset your baby, and we want them to stay calm and sleepy for the best photos.

Session Timing & Atmosphere:

Newborn sessions are relaxed and unhurried, with baby truly in control. I’m here to give special attention to every client, and I’m happy to wait while you nurse, feed, or soothe your baby as needed. I also don’t mind assisting with that!

As a mom of six and with over 12 years of newborn photography experience, I understand that each session is unique. I keep the studio warm to ensure your baby stays comfortable and relaxed.

If we’re photographing siblings or parents, I generally like to start with those shots first because dads often run warm, siblings can get restless, and moms may feel warm from postpartum hormones! If we need to give siblings extra time to warm up, please know I’m very patient and will work at your pace.

Accidents Happen:

It’s completely normal (and okay!) for babies to relieve themselves during the session, whether on the backdrop or elsewhere. I’m not upset by this at all, and after every session, I make sure to launder all items that come in contact with baby.

Please bring a pacifier (even if baby doesn’t usually take one). A pacifier can help distract baby during certain poses. I have plenty of diaper and wipes & burp clothes on hand if needed.

Sibling Participation:

If siblings are involved in the session, please bring something to keep them entertained while they aren’t being photographed. Snacks are always a bonus! This will help ensure that both baby and mom stay calm during the session.

Personal Touches:

I have a variety of props and styled wraps available for your session, but I also encourage you to bring something meaningful to make it extra special. Whether it’s a family heirloom, an item from the nursery, or something tied to mom or dad’s profession or hobbies (e.g., sports, hunting), I’d love to incorporate it into your photos.

This is optional, of course – I’m happy to work with our studio collection, but a personal item always adds a unique touch to the session.

Creative Vision & Pinterest Inspiration:

I take great pride in my brand and artistic vision, and I appreciate your trust in me to create images that will leave you swooning long after those tiny feet begin to walk. While I don’t accept lists of Pinterest photos, I’m more than happy to discuss any ideas or specific setups you’d like to incorporate before your session. Feel free to chat with me ahead of time if you have something in mind! Feel free to head to mandolin and magnolia newborns on Instagram for past sets created in our studio!
